Rebeca Méndez

Rebeca Méndez is a renowned Mexican-American graphic designer, artist, and educator whose multidisciplinary work spans across branding, typography, motion graphics, and environmental design. Born in 1962 in Mexico City, Méndez moved to the United States in 1980 to pursue her education and career in design. She earned her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Méndez's design philosophy is deeply rooted in her bicultural identity and her fascination with the intersection of art, science, and technology. Her work often explores themes of nature, sustainability, and the human experience, characterized by a bold and experimental approach to typography, color, and composition. Throughout her career, Méndez has created iconic designs for a wide range of clients, including cultural institutions, non-profit organizations, and global brands. Some of her most notable projects include the identity and environmental graphics for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the branding and packaging for the Mexican food company Herdez, and the exhibition design for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement. Méndez's work has been widely recognized and exhibited internationally, with her designs featured in prestigious collections such as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In addition to her professional practice, Méndez is a dedicated educator, having taught at the California Institute of the Arts, Art Center College of Design, and the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, where she currently serves as a professor in the Design Media Arts program. Her influence extends beyond her own work, as she mentors and inspires new generations of designers to push the boundaries of the field and use design as a tool for social and environmental change.
