R&D Cocktail Lab Bar is an innovative architectural and interior design project that masterfully merges Eastern and Western design elements, creating a unique hospitality space that celebrates cultural fusion and experimental mixology. Located in Taipei and completed in January 2015, this sophisticated establishment distinguishes itself through its thoughtful integration of traditional Chinese cultural elements within a contemporary bar setting. The exterior features a minimalist gray façade complemented by a molecular-inspired logo design, creating an air of mystery and intrigue for urban patrons. The interior space, spanning 149 meters, overcomes architectural challenges through ingenious design solutions, including the strategic use of heterogeneous mirrors, metal materials, and varied-height tungsten lighting arrangements that enhance spatial flow and visual connectivity. A significant design feature is the incorporation of traditional Chinese elements, such as engraved phrases from the Compendium of Materia Medica, decorative grilles, and Chinese herbal medicine cabinets, which are harmoniously integrated with modern Western tavern aesthetics. The bar area maintains generous proportions to facilitate both social gathering and an immersive cultural experience, while the custom cocktail development area, adorned with the plague companions of poetry and wine, exemplifies the venue's commitment to innovative beverage creation. This exceptional design, created by Joy Chou, earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2016, recognizing its outstanding contribution to contemporary hospitality design through its successful fusion of cultural elements, innovative space utilization, and atmospheric lighting solutions.
