Qutan Primary School Extension is an architecturally significant educational facility expansion project located in a remote village in southern China, exemplifying a harmonious blend of contemporary educational needs with traditional architectural wisdom. The project encompasses a thoughtfully designed two-story building that houses four classrooms, a reading room, two activity rooms, and teachers' offices, spanning an area of 570 square meters. The design demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to local architectural heritage through its innovative use of indigenous materials, particularly incorporating cobblestones from local riverbeds in its masonry walls, while addressing modern educational requirements. The extension's architectural language creates a deliberate spatial division between the school and village spaces, enhancing safety and fostering a stronger sense of community belonging. Notable design features include strategically placed sun-shading grilles on the east and west exteriors, an expanded western corridor for additional student activities, and a central circulation route that pays homage to traditional architectural forms. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully addresses multiple challenges including climate adaptation, spatial optimization, and community integration. Its thoughtful implementation has not only expanded the learning environment but has also revitalized the village's communal spaces through the integration of a Central Small Square and entrance plaza, demonstrating how educational architecture can serve as a catalyst for broader community enhancement while preserving cultural architectural traditions.
