Quarter Residential House is an innovative residential architecture project designed by Michihiro Matsuo that exemplifies a sophisticated approach to modern urban living through its distinctive composition of four irregularly arranged boxes of varying sizes. Completed in 2014 in Osaka, Japan, this two-story timber structure occupies a site area of 193.34 square meters with a built area of 152.72 square meters, representing a significant achievement in contemporary residential design. The building's most striking feature is its closed exterior appearance, which belies a complex and thoughtfully connected interior spatial arrangement that facilitates diverse living experiences. The design masterfully balances privacy with social connectivity through strategically positioned windows and walls that optimize natural daylight, ventilation, and views while maintaining resident privacy. The interior is characterized by an innovative network of passages and halls that create visual connections between spaces, allowing for multiple directional movement throughout the structure. This architectural solution addresses the fundamental challenge of maintaining privacy in urban housing while fostering community engagement, achieved through careful consideration of spatial relationships and visual connections. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional merit in its approach to contemporary residential architecture, particularly in its resolution of the public-private spatial dialogue. The design's success is evidenced by its significant visitor interest, with approximately 100 people visiting monthly to study its innovative architectural solutions.
