Qleek Music Player

Qleek Music Player

Qleek Music Player is an innovative digital-physical hybrid music player that revolutionizes the way users interact with digital music through tangible wooden hexagonal tokens. Designed by Johanna Hartzheim, Pierre-Rudolf Gerlach, and Ismail Salhi, this futuristic music system seamlessly bridges the gap between traditional physical music collections and modern digital streaming services. The system consists of a base player unit measuring 160mm x 160mm x 25mm and individual hexagonal wooden pieces called Qleeks (80mm x 70mm x 12mm) crafted from sustainable French beechwood. Each Qleek token serves as a physical representation of digital playlists, artists, or albums, automatically syncing with various online music services and playing instantly when placed on the base unit. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Futuristic Design category, draws inspiration from Naoto Fukasawa's CD player concept and addresses the nostalgia for physical music collections in the digital age. The hexagonal shape of the tokens was specifically chosen to enable modular arrangement while maintaining aesthetic harmony when displayed. Research involving over 400 participants revealed that 55% of users missed the physical aspect of music collections, leading to this innovative solution that combines the tactile satisfaction of vinyl records with the convenience of digital streaming. The player's design philosophy emphasizes simplicity, intuitive interaction, and the organic quality of music through its use of natural materials, creating an elegant bridge between digital convenience and physical presence in living spaces.
