Qingdao Line 1 Subway is a significant urban transportation infrastructure project that exemplifies innovative interior space design and public art integration, connecting Chengyang District, the old city, and the West Coast New District as one of China's ultra-long metro lines. The design philosophy embraces a bold and artistic approach, incorporating vibrant colors and poetic expressions to celebrate Qingdao's century-old architectural heritage, industrial development history, and natural elements such as waves, reefs, and seasonal changes. The project, completed in December 2021, features distinctive artistic installations utilizing advanced materials and techniques, including glazed mosaics, ceramic splicing, and metal glaze plate applications. Notable artistic works include Proud (36000mm x 3050mm), Liuzhen (35650mm x 3050mm), Bright Moon (44550mm x 3050mm), and Purple Lan (spanning 86150mm x 3050mm and 101400mm x 3050mm), each crafted with hot-melt glass mosaic and specialized ceramic techniques. The design implementation follows the principle of seeing the light but not the light in its lighting scheme, while maintaining efficient wayfinding systems throughout the stations. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category demonstrates excellence in spatial integration, establishing a unique vocabulary system that harmoniously balances functional requirements with artistic expression, ultimately serving as a cultural welfare initiative for citizens and symbolizing modern urban civilization.
