Putchair Stool

Putchair Stool is an innovative and conceptually driven furniture design that challenges traditional notions of form and functionality through its unique modular composition. Created by German designer Alicia Rühr, this transformable piece consists of 216 black spherical elements, each approximately 70mm in diameter, that can be assembled and disassembled to create various functional forms including a side table or cubical stool with an edge length of 400mm. The design's distinctive characteristic lies in its materiality, combining soft foam material encased in black balloons and equipped with strategically placed Velcro dots that enable flexible configuration. Each sphere features three hook and three loop Velcro attachments, allowing for intuitive assembly and transformation. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a philosophical approach to furniture where functionality exists only through user interaction, rather than presenting a predetermined form. This conceptual piece explores the relationship between object permanence and utility, offering a unique perspective on furniture design where the object can dissolve into an abstract mass when not in use, challenging conventional perspectives on furniture's role in space. The construction process involved meticulous material exploration, utilizing 432 black balloons, 1296 adhesive Velcro dots, and 2.16 square meters of 10mm-thick foam material to achieve its distinctive aesthetic and functional properties.
