Pudong Funlife Food Mall And Residential

Pudong Funlife Food mall and residential is an innovative architectural transformation project in Shanghai that exemplifies the successful conversion of an existing structure into a vibrant mixed-use development combining retail, dining, and residential spaces. The project, completed in November 2017, represents a thoughtful approach to urban renewal by reimagining a traditional building into a contemporary community hub while preserving local cultural elements. The design, conceived by Pan Mok and Ye Hai, introduces a distinctive home feeling concept through its architectural treatment, featuring a welcoming double-height entrance and carefully curated spaces across five floors. The ground floor houses traditional Chinese food stalls, creating an authentic street market atmosphere, while the second floor accommodates restaurants, and the third floor serves as an educational center. The fourth and fifth floors are dedicated to residential units, demonstrating effective vertical zoning. The renovation involved significant structural modifications, including the transformation of single-story shopfronts into double-height spaces and the addition of new window openings on upper floors to enhance natural lighting. The design incorporates materials such as Aluca Aluminium Panel, local Chinese tiles, and bronze metal tubing, creating a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements. Notable design features include balcony-style food stalls, strategic skylights over stairwells, and the innovative use of traditional Shanghai street elements such as distinctive light bulb arrangements. This project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully addresses contemporary urban living needs while fostering a sense of community and cultural connection.
