Project EGG Small Pavilion
Project EGG Small Pavilion is a groundbreaking architectural installation that represents a significant milestone in collaborative 3D printing technology and community-driven design. This innovative pavilion, designed by Michiel van der Kley in collaboration with Rinus Roelofs and Gijs de Zwart, consists of 4,760 unique 'stones,' each individually 3D printed by hundreds of contributors worldwide, making it the largest community-created 3D printed structure of its kind. The pavilion, measuring 5000mm x 3000mm x 2600mm, exemplifies a revolutionary approach to architectural construction where no two components are identical, challenging traditional building methodologies. Constructed using PLA material and assembled with small screws, the structure was conceptualized using sophisticated parametric design software, specifically Rhino and Grasshopper, which enabled the creation of complex, non-repetitive geometrical patterns. The design philosophy behind the pavilion draws inspiration from natural forms and leverages advanced digital fabrication techniques to create an immersive spatial experience that evokes emotional responses from visitors. Each contributing maker's name is permanently integrated into their respective stone, creating a unique connection between the creators and the structure. This pioneering project, which has been exhibited at various prestigious venues including Design Week in Eindhoven and Fundacion Telefonica in Madrid, earned the Platinum A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, recognizing its exceptional innovation in digital fabrication and community engagement. The pavilion stands as a testament to the possibilities of distributed manufacturing and collaborative design in the digital age, demonstrating how modern technology can facilitate unprecedented forms of architectural expression and community participation.
