Prerecorded Digital Video Discs

Prerecorded digital video discs, commonly referred to as DVD, are a type of optical disc used for storing and playing back digital video and audio content. DVDs were introduced in the late 1990s as a replacement for VHS tapes and quickly became the dominant format for home video distribution. DVDs are similar in appearance to compact discs (CDs), but have a higher storage capacity and can store more data. A standard DVD can hold up to 4.7 gigabytes (GB) of data, which is enough to store a feature-length movie with high-quality audio and video. DVDs use a digital video compression format called MPEG-2, which allows for high-quality video and audio to be stored on the disc while minimizing the amount of space required. DVDs can be played back on a variety of devices, including DVD players, computers, and gaming consoles. One of the main advantages of DVDs is their durability and longevity. Unlike VHS tapes, which can degrade over time and lose their quality, DVDs are designed to last for many years without any loss of quality. DVDs are also easy to store and transport, making them a popular choice for movie collectors and enthusiasts. In recent years, the popularity of DVDs has declined as streaming services have become more prevalent. However, DVDs are still widely used for home video distribution and remain a popular choice for many consumers.
