Prerecorded Compact Discs
Prerecorded compact discs, also known as CDs, are a type of digital optical disc that stores audio, video, and other types of data. They were first introduced in the early 1980s and quickly became a popular medium for music distribution. CDs are made of polycarbonate plastic and are 12cm in diameter, with a thickness of 1.2mm. They have a reflective layer of aluminum or silver, which is covered by a protective layer of lacquer. The data on a CD is stored in a series of pits and lands on the reflective layer, which are read by a laser beam in a CD player. Prerecorded CDs are produced by a process called replication. A glass master is created from the original recording, which is used to stamp out thousands of identical discs. The discs are then printed with labels and packaged for distribution. Prerecorded CDs are available in a wide range of genres, from classical music to rock and roll, and are sold in music stores and online. One of the advantages of CDs over other types of music media, such as vinyl records or cassette tapes, is their durability. CDs are less susceptible to damage from scratches and dust, and can be played repeatedly without significant degradation in sound quality. They also have a larger storage capacity than other formats, allowing for longer playing times and higher quality sound. Despite the popularity of digital music downloads and streaming services, prerecorded CDs continue to be sold and enjoyed by music enthusiasts around the world. They remain a reliable and high-quality medium for music distribution, and are likely to remain so for many years to come.
