Polyhedron Stool is an innovative height-adjustable seating solution that exemplifies the convergence of biomimetic design principles and advanced manufacturing technologies. Created by Jin Woong Lee, this remarkable piece draws inspiration from the natural closing mechanism of flowers, incorporating this organic movement into a functional furniture design. The stool's distinctive feature lies in its sophisticated height adjustment mechanism, which mimics the gathering motion of flower petals through an intricate system of gears and pillars. Predominantly manufactured through 3D printing technology utilizing PLA material with chrome plating and matte finishes, the design comprises 20 different components totaling 36 pieces, with minimal use of traditional materials limited to CNC-processed metal parts and aluminum shafts. The stool's dimensions range from 490mm x 470mm x 450mm to 300mm x 300mm x 680mm when adjusted, demonstrating its versatile height adaptation capabilities. The innovative design approach allows for easy reproduction and customization, enabling individuals to create variations according to their preferences while maintaining structural integrity through careful engineering considerations. The mechanism operates through a rotating head system, where four internal gears convert circular motion into vertical movement, raising the pillars to adjust the height. This groundbreaking design, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, represents a significant advancement in furniture design, combining functional innovation with aesthetic appeal while showcasing the potential of 3D printing technology in contemporary furniture manufacturing.
