Ploi Sculptural Light is an innovative sculptural lighting fixture that masterfully combines artistic expression with functional illumination, created by Indonesian designer Jacqueline M Thenu. This sophisticated lighting design draws inspiration from the geometric principles of folding techniques and their dynamic characteristics, utilizing wire gauze as its primary medium instead of conventional paper. The design's distinctive feature lies in its translucent effect achieved through the careful manipulation of wire gauze, which creates harmonious pleats that follow the form's contours. Measuring 330 x 340 x 550 millimeters, with a cable length of 1500 millimeters, this lighting fixture demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its manually folded construction, requiring meticulous attention to achieve consistent pleating patterns. The asymmetrical abstract shape produces varying monumental forms when viewed from different angles, creating dramatic lighting effects that transform spaces through shadow play and dimensional illusions. The design process, completed in Jakarta between April and May 2016, involved extensive material experimentation and research to perfect the folding technique with wire gauze, which proved superior to other materials in terms of malleability and structural integrity. The piece exemplifies the intersection of art and functionality, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to combining traditional folding techniques with contemporary materials and lighting design.
