Plastidobe Ecological Housing
Plastidobe Ecological Housing is an innovative, self-build ecological housing system that combines sustainable materials and traditional building techniques to create affordable, environmentally conscious dwellings. This groundbreaking architectural solution, designed by Abel Gómez-Morón and team, employs a modular construction system utilizing recycled plastic components and natural materials to address housing challenges in environmentally vulnerable regions. The system's core structure consists of precisely engineered modules, each comprising four recycled plastic ribbed plaques connected through a pressure-based male-female joinery system, eliminating the need for adhesives. These modules, measuring 800mm x 400mm x 550mm in their basic form, are filled with moisturized earth to create solid, trapezoidal blocks that provide both acoustic and water-resistant properties. The design incorporates innovative biological engineering through the integration of alfalfa roots, which grow within the walls to depths of up to 25 feet, serving as natural structural reinforcement and creating an unprecedented connection between the building and the earth. The roof system features a galvanized metal structure covered with pasture, functioning as a natural thermal insulator. This Iron A' Design Award-winning project in the Building Materials and Construction Components category represents a significant advancement in sustainable architecture, offering a practical solution that combines ease of assembly, environmental responsibility, and structural integrity. The design's emphasis on using recycled materials, coupled with its integration of natural elements, creates a harmonious balance between modern construction techniques and ecological preservation, while its modular nature facilitates efficient transportation and assembly, making it particularly suitable for rapid deployment in areas affected by natural disasters or housing crises.
