Place Of Respite

Place of respite has been a concept in architecture for millennia, being of particular importance in ancient religious architecture, as well as in modern commercial architecture. In its broadest sense, respite can be defined as a place of retreat from the rigours of everyday life, where the individual can be at peace, either to rest or to focus on the spiritual. This can be seen in the use of courtyards and cloisters in ancient religious buildings, as well as the modern trend of creating green or natural landscapes within the built environment. At its core, respite is a place of refuge, where one can find a place of peace amongst the chaos of life.

Solace, tranquility, seclusion, sanctuary, refuge.

Place Of Respite

Masonry architecture has traditionally been used to create places of respite where people can take refuge from the stresses of the outside world. A place of respite is defined as a space in which to relax, reflect, and find peace. By its nature, masonry architecture is a perfect medium for creating such spaces as its structural integrity and beauty are conducive to the feeling of security and restfulness that a place of respite should evoke. Masonry walls, arches, and columns can be used to create a sense of enclosure and can be further enhanced by the incorporation of natural elements such as wood, stone, and plants. Such features can contribute to a sense of tranquility, allowing visitors to relax and recharge.

Calm, Peaceful, Relaxation, Comfort, Sanctuary
