Piston Rings
Piston rings are an essential component of internal combustion engines that are responsible for sealing the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. They are circular metal rings that are fitted around the piston and come in contact with the cylinder wall as the piston moves up and down. The primary function of piston rings is to prevent the combustion gases from leaking into the crankcase and to prevent the engine oil from entering the combustion chamber. Piston rings are typically made of cast iron or steel and are designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures. They are usually installed in grooves on the outer surface of the piston and are held in place by tension. The rings are designed to expand and contract slightly to maintain a tight seal against the cylinder wall. There are different types of piston rings, each with its unique function. The top compression ring is the first ring that comes into contact with the combustion gases and is responsible for sealing the combustion chamber. The second compression ring is located below the top ring and provides additional sealing. The oil control ring is located at the bottom of the piston and is responsible for regulating the amount of oil that enters the combustion chamber. In summary, piston rings are essential components of internal combustion engines that ensure the proper functioning of the engine by preventing leakage of combustion gases and engine oil. They are made of durable materials and come in different types, each with its unique function.
