P'iolin Musical Instrument, Paper Craftwork
P'iolin Musical Instrument, Paper Craftwork is an innovative and environmentally conscious musical instrument design that reimagines the traditional Stradivarius 1/2 violin through the medium of French watercolor paper. This groundbreaking creation, designed by Yi-Jen Hsieh, represents a significant departure from conventional violin craftsmanship by replacing traditional wood with carefully selected paper materials. The instrument's construction involves three distinct types of French watercolor paper, with Arches 185 gsm serving as the front plate, Arches 300 gsm forming the bassbar and linings, and Canson 240 gsm comprising the back plate, ribs, scroll, and neck block. The manufacturing process combines traditional violin-making techniques with modern technology, utilizing computer-aided design, laser cutting, and CNC machining to create precise molds from waterproof plastic. The paper components are carefully shaped using Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) adhesive under controlled environmental conditions, with the surface ultimately being finished with Nitrocellulose lacquer to enhance durability and acoustic properties. This innovative approach to musical instrument design, which earned a Gold A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, challenges conventional material applications while exploring the intersection of sustainability, craftsmanship, and musical performance. The project, completed between 2011 and 2014, demonstrates the potential of paper as an alternative material in musical instrument construction, while maintaining the aesthetic and functional qualities associated with traditional violin craftsmanship.
