Pimp My Pencil Add-On, Toy

Pimp My Pencil Add-On, Toy is an innovative collection of 3D-printed accessories designed to enhance the functionality and playful aspects of standard hexagonal pencils. Created by designer Matthias Krissmayr during the winter semester of 2013/2014 at the Free University of Bozen Bolzano, this versatile set represents a creative exploration of 3D printing capabilities while transforming ordinary writing implements into multi-functional tools. The collection encompasses various attachments including a USB stick, cutter, compass, catapult, LED light, licorice stick holder, cutlery set, paper clip, and screwdriver, all precisely manufactured using laser/nylon-powder 3D printing technology for optimal precision and durability. Each component is thoughtfully designed to maintain compact dimensions, with no single piece exceeding 5 centimeters, allowing the entire set to be conveniently stored in an A5-sized cardboard box. The project emerged from the designer's dual objectives of investigating the possibilities of 3D printing technology and creating engaging solutions for mundane office environments. The design process involved sophisticated computer-aided design using Rhino software, followed by meticulous 3D printing execution to ensure high-grade finishing and functionality. This innovative approach to everyday stationery earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category, acknowledging its contribution to advancing the intersection of practical utility and playful design in workplace accessories. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in overcoming the technical challenges of miniaturization while maintaining functionality, resulting in a unique product that seamlessly combines utility with entertainment value.
