Picturesque
The Picturesque, within the context of architecture, has been understood as a style that seeks to create a setting that is both visually pleasing and evocative. It is characterized by the use of natural elements, such as forests, rolling hills, and rivers, in order to create a sense of harmony and balance. Additionally, elements of the Picturesque often possess an element of surprise, such as a waterfall or a hidden grotto. The Picturesque style is a reflection of the Romantic period, when people sought to escape the confines of the urban environment and embrace the beauty of the natural world.

Masonry architecture has long been renowned for its ability to create a picturesque aesthetic. In the context of architecture, the term ‘Picturesque’ refers to an artistic style that is characterized by its irregularity, asymmetry and variety of texture, color, scale and form. This style is often favored for its ability to create a more natural, harmonious and aesthetically pleasing landscape that often evokes romantic or nostalgic feelings. The style has been popularized through the works of landscape and architectural theorists such as William Gilpin, Uvedale Price and John Ruskin, who emphasized the importance of incorporating the principles of Picturesque design in masonry architecture. The principles of Picturesque design emphasize the importance of creating a natural balance between the elements of a building and its surrounding environment, and often includes features such as winding pathways, terraced gardens, and other elements of asymmetrical design.
