Periscopes

A periscope is an optical device that is used to observe objects or scenes from a concealed or inaccessible location. It consists of a series of mirrors or prisms that reflect light, allowing the viewer to see around corners, over obstacles, or through narrow openings. Periscopes are commonly used in military applications, such as in tanks or submarines, to provide a view of the surroundings without exposing the operator to danger. The first periscope was invented in the early 19th century by Johann Heinrich Lambert, a Swiss mathematician and physicist. However, it was not until the advent of modern warfare that periscopes became widely used. During World War I, periscopes were used in trenches to observe enemy movements, and in World War II, they were used extensively in tanks and submarines. Periscopes come in various shapes and sizes, depending on their intended use. Some are handheld, while others are mounted on vehicles or fixed installations. They can be simple or complex, with multiple mirrors or prisms to provide a wider field of view. Some periscopes are also equipped with cameras or other sensors to provide additional information to the operator. Despite the development of advanced imaging technologies, periscopes remain an important tool in military and civilian applications. They are used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, and marine, to provide a view of hard-to-reach areas or to inspect equipment and structures.
