Pekin Kaku Chinese Restaurant

Pekin Kaku Chinese Restaurant is an innovative architectural renovation project in Himeji, Japan, that reimagines traditional Chinese restaurant design through contemporary minimalist aesthetics. The establishment, designed by Japanese architect Tetsuya Matsumoto, represents a significant departure from conventional Chinese restaurant interiors by rejecting ornate decorative elements in favor of clean lines and sophisticated architectural elements. The centerpiece of the 250-square-meter dining space is a striking Red-Aurora ceiling installation, created using 80-meter-long string curtains suspended from 90-centimeter wooden lattice circles, offering a modern interpretation of the auspicious red color prevalent in Chinese culture. The interior design thoughtfully incorporates traditional dark Shanghai bricks along the walls, creating a sophisticated backdrop that harmoniously balances contemporary and historical elements. The space features carefully curated cultural elements from Chinese heritage, including minimalist displays of Terracotta warriors, the legendary Red Hare, and Chinese ceramics, presenting these historical artifacts in a contemporary context. The restaurant's design philosophy extends to its spatial flow, beginning with a hybrid Japanese-Chinese garden that creates a transitional space between the Japanese urban exterior and the Chinese-inspired interior. This innovative approach to cultural fusion and spatial design earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its excellence in redefining traditional restaurant aesthetics while maintaining cultural authenticity through materials and spatial composition.
