Peel Cabinet
Peel Cabinet is an innovative and sophisticated piece of furniture design that revolutionizes the traditional concept of cabinet doors through its unique opening mechanism. Created by furniture designer Leah K. S. Amick, this freestanding cabinet showcases a groundbreaking door design that, instead of utilizing conventional hinges, employs a distinctive peeling motion. The cabinet's body is masterfully crafted from white oak and rests upon a lightly brushed stainless steel base, measuring 460mm in width, 68mm in depth, and 1320mm in height. The most distinctive feature is its door mechanism, comprising seven angular panels laminated onto heavy canvas, creating an inverse tambour door effect secured by strategically embedded neodymium magnets. This innovative design creates a captivating tactile experience as the door segments sequentially break away and fold back, producing a melodic scale when the panels progressively snap back into place. The cabinet's aesthetic is enhanced by angular grooves repeated on three sides, which intersect with the white oak's natural grain pattern and converge at the top left corner where a prominent handle invites interaction. The interior space is thoughtfully organized with a single shelf, providing practical storage while maintaining minimalist elegance. This remarkable piece, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016, represents a perfect harmony between functional innovation and artistic expression, challenging conventional furniture design paradigms while maintaining practical utility.
