Created by Portuguese designers Francisco Elias and Nelson Fernandes, this distinctive case represents a significant departure from conventional plastic DVD packaging, featuring an organically inspired design that seamlessly merges functionality with artistic expression. The box, measuring 140mm x 140mm, is crafted from a single wooden plank through a sophisticated two-stage production process combining mechanical and manual techniques. The mechanical phase involves precise laser cutting and printing operations lasting approximately 90 minutes to produce six distinct components, while the manual phase employs intricate collage techniques, followed by a drying period and meticulous sandpaper finishing to create each unique piece. The exterior surface displays an array of linear patterns reminiscent of growing trees, creating a naturalistic aesthetic that appears to have been organically shaped from forest materials. The design incorporates an innovative opening mechanism activated by pressing a central button, requiring placement on a flat surface for optimal functionality. This exceptional packaging design, which was developed between January 2013 and January 2014 in Fundão, Portugal, earned the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, recognizing its outstanding contribution to sustainable design practices and artistic innovation in packaging solutions.
