Panchgaon Restaurant
Panchgaon Restaurant is a culturally immersive dining establishment that masterfully reimagines the essence of rural Indian village architecture and traditions within a contemporary urban context. Located along a highway setting, this innovative architectural project spans 2,000 square meters within a expansive 65,000-square-meter plot, offering a transformative dining experience that celebrates India's rich cultural heritage. The restaurant's design philosophy centers on creating an authentic festival-like atmosphere through carefully curated architectural elements, including intricately decorated entrances, traditional doorways, and hand-painted murals that pay homage to rural Indian aesthetics. The spatial journey begins with a commanding entrance adorned with archway lighting, leading to an entrance hallway featuring a distinctive ceiling installation of hand-painted milk transportation cans decorated with Warli art. The central atrium showcases a remarkable installation of 100 bamboo baskets, demonstrating the designers' commitment to incorporating authentic rural materials and craftsmanship. The project, completed in March 2021 by designers Devesh Bhatia and Pratyay Chakrabarti, has earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional integration of traditional elements with contemporary design sensibilities. The restaurant's interior features extensive use of jute rope ceiling patterns, traditional jaalis (latticed screens), and carefully selected windows that maintain human scale proportions, all derived from extensive research into rural Indian architectural traditions. This thoughtful amalgamation of cultural elements, including wall art and hand-painted portraits of people in traditional rural attire, creates an immersive atmosphere that transports visitors from their urban surroundings into a celebration of India's village heritage.
