Owspace Bookstore is an innovative architectural and interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of cultural heritage, contemporary design principles, and functional spatial planning. Located in Hangzhou, this 2,800-square-meter retail space spans three floors and represents a significant advancement in bookstore design, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design. The design, conceived by Cheng Yu Hsieh and team, transforms the traditional concept of a bookstore into a multifunctional cultural sanctuary, featuring a striking ten-meter-tall book wall known as the Knowledge Map that serves as both a functional element and an architectural statement. The space employs a sophisticated warm black color scheme complemented by stained hardwood furnishings, creating an atmosphere that balances aesthetic refinement with intellectual pursuit. The design incorporates numerous innovative elements, including French windows that facilitate a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, arched bookshelves that optimize natural lighting distribution, and thoughtfully programmed areas across multiple floors encompassing workshops, dining spaces, a concert hall, gallery, and specialized book sections. The architectural composition unfolds like a traditional Chinese scroll, paying homage to cultural heritage while embracing modern functionality, with carefully considered illumination strategies that transform the structure into a luminous beacon during evening hours. The project's success lies in its holistic approach to creating a cultural domain that transcends the conventional boundaries of retail space, offering a comprehensive environment for literary exploration, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
