Overshoot
Overshoot is a concept in design and systems thinking that refers to the phenomenon of a system or process exceeding its sustainable limits or equilibrium state due to delayed feedback or overcorrection. In the context of design, overshoot often occurs when a solution or intervention aimed at addressing a problem ends up exacerbating the issue or creating new, unintended consequences. This can happen when designers fail to consider the long-term implications of their decisions or when they prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability. Overshoot can manifest in various forms, such as the overuse of resources, the creation of waste and pollution, or the disruption of social and ecological systems. It is often associated with the concept of limits to growth, which suggests that there are inherent constraints to the expansion and development of any system, and that exceeding these limits can lead to collapse or decline. To avoid overshoot, designers must adopt a systems-thinking approach that considers the interconnectedness and feedback loops within a system, as well as the potential for unintended consequences. This involves designing for resilience, adaptability, and long-term sustainability, rather than focusing solely on efficiency or short-term performance. By understanding the principles of overshoot and incorporating them into the design process, designers can create solutions that are more balanced, sustainable, and aligned with the natural limits of the systems they operate within.
