Oukikyo Renovated House
Oukikyo Renovated House is an exemplary architectural renovation project completed in 2018 in Wakayama city, Japan, that masterfully integrates traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design principles. This single-story wooden structure, encompassing 66 square meters, was transformed into a sophisticated living space centered around a traditional Japanese painting of cherry blossoms, titled Yozakura Gekka by Hiroshi Senju. The renovation, designed by Atsumasa Tamura, demonstrates exceptional spatial organization by dividing a single room into living, study, and bedroom areas while maintaining an open, flowing atmosphere. The design incorporates the four seasons through thoughtful material selection and traditional patterns: cherry blossoms represent spring through the central painting, hemp leaf patterns on sliding doors evoke summer, maple leaves on lacquered panels symbolize autumn, and pine-needle patterns woven into silk ceiling elements suggest winter. The project's technical innovation is evident in its implementation of Piet Hein's Super Ellipse formula to create an elegant curved ceiling that maximizes the perception of space despite height constraints. Premium materials, including Hinoki cypress and Botticino Classico marble, were carefully selected to achieve a refined balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. The project's excellence was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial design and cultural preservation. The renovation successfully creates a tranquil sanctuary where traditional Japanese design elements harmoniously coexist with contemporary living requirements, establishing a new paradigm for residential renovation that honors cultural heritage while embracing modern functionality.
