Otter Personal Disaster Pack
Otter Personal Disaster Pack is an innovative personal disaster relief backpack designed to provide protection and safety during both wet and dry emergency situations. This versatile safety equipment, designed by Benson Lee in Singapore between 2010 and 2011, combines practical storage solutions with life-saving flotation capabilities. The design features a sophisticated three-component system: a specialized pouch containing a deployable life vest, a buoyant bag frame capable of mounting additional storage compartments, and quick-seal dry bags enclosed within a protective polycarbonate shell manufactured through vacuum forming techniques. The pack's dimensions measure approximately 320mm x 310mm x 560mm, and it utilizes high-quality materials including Polyvinyl chloride tarpaulin with magnetic sealing strips, Ethylene-vinyl acetate foam frame construction, and durable nylon fabric upholstery. Its most distinctive feature is the innovative flotation mechanism that positions users similar to a backward-swimming otter, maintaining the head above water by supporting the neck area. The life vest component employs a chemical reaction-based inflation system, activated by compression, similar to foil balloon technology. This design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design category, represents a significant advancement in personal safety equipment by addressing both immediate survival needs and the practical consideration of preserving personal belongings during disaster situations. The design's dual-purpose functionality serves not only as a practical safety device but also as a psychological aid, helping victims maintain morale during the recovery phase by securing their valuable possessions.
