Origami Kinetic Table

Origami Kinetic table is an innovative mechanically expandable furniture piece that seamlessly merges functional design with the aesthetic principles of traditional Japanese paper folding art. This sophisticated table, designed by Italian architects Micaela Pignatelli and Ubaldo Occhinegro, features a transformative square plane that mechanically extends through the deployment of four lateral wings originally folded beneath the main surface. The table's distinctive mechanism operates through a 90-degree rotation of the tabletop relative to its support base, activated by an electromechanical linear actuator concealed beneath the surface. The design incorporates four metal rigid rods connected to the rotating plate and wings, synchronized to extend the wings outward, facilitated by hinges with two degrees of freedom for enhanced stability during transformation. The table's dimensions transition from 1.20 x 1.20 meters when closed to an impressive 2.4 x 2.4 meters when fully extended, making it exceptionally versatile for varying spatial requirements. The base features a pyramidal trunk shape with an irregular octagonal upper base and square bottom, complemented by surface engravings that create a triangular tessellation pattern, evoking the characteristic folded surfaces of origami. This innovative design, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, can be crafted from various materials including wood, plastic, metal, glass, stone, and marble, demonstrating its adaptability to different aesthetic preferences and functional requirements. The automatic opening mechanism not only serves a practical purpose but also creates a captivating visual display, representing a harmonious blend of engineering precision and artistic expression.
