Onix Armchair is an innovative piece of contemporary furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of geometric precision and ergonomic comfort. Created by Brazilian architect and designer Katty Kaitazoff, this sculptural seating solution draws inspiration from the faceted surfaces of precious stones, particularly onyx, translating natural mineral formations into a sophisticated furniture piece. The armchair's distinctive design features a meticulously crafted carbon steel structure, entirely handmade through a complex process involving laser cutting, folding, welding, and finishing techniques reminiscent of origami principles. The design's development began with extensive prototyping at 1:5 scale using paper models, eventually evolving into full-scale production in carbon steel. Measuring 900 x 620 x 900 millimeters, the chair offers two distinct variants: a NAKED option that showcases the bare metallic structure, highlighting the craftmanship of its folds and creases, and a FULL option featuring complete upholstery for enhanced comfort. The armchair's geometric composition creates pronounced lateral supports and a backrest structure that naturally adapts to the human form, while the precise intersection between the steel frame and upholstery demonstrates exceptional attention to detail. This design, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019, represents a significant achievement in contemporary furniture design, combining industrial materials with artisanal craftsmanship to create a piece that serves both functional and aesthetic purposes in modern interior spaces.
