Omni Chang’An Site Concept Show Cultural Travel Performance

Omni Chang'An Site Concept Show Cultural Travel Performance is a groundbreaking large-scale site-specific conceptual theatre production that represents a significant advancement in the fusion of traditional Chinese cultural heritage with contemporary stage technology. This innovative performance, which premiered in Xi'an, China in October 2023, consists of eight distinct original segments that seamlessly blend intangible cultural heritages of Shaanxi province with state-of-the-art theatrical technology. The 90-minute production, directed by renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, employs over twenty advanced stage technologies, including matrix screens, wall projections, elevating stages, holographic projections, mechanical arms, and custom-developed stage mechanisms. The show's creation involved more than 300 programming team members, who contributed to 35 creative program packages and over 5,000 visual design drafts, requiring more than 80,000 hours of production and rendering. The performance uniquely addresses the contemporary challenge of making traditional culture accessible to modern audiences, particularly younger generations, through its innovative approach to cultural presentation. Each segment - Heming (Harmony), Nichang (The Rainbow Skirt), Yingren (The Imagined Man), Wanxiang, Chang'an, Chongyuan (The Reunion), Gongsheng (Interdependence), and Chuanqi (The Legend) - represents different dimensions and styles of Chinese cultural expression. The production, which was awarded the prestigious Gold A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in reconciling traditional cultural elements with modern technological innovation, setting new standards for cultural performance and preservation. This groundbreaking project, performed by fewer than 150 artists, spans 5,000 years of history and represents a significant milestone in the evolution of theatrical presentation and cultural preservation.
