Omdesign 2016 Sustainable packaging is an innovative eco-conscious design solution that masterfully combines Portuguese cultural heritage with environmental sustainability, earning the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category. This groundbreaking packaging design, conceived in 2016, takes the form of an acorn and ingeniously integrates two iconic Portuguese elements: Port Wine and cork material. The design consists of a wooden top section and a detachable cork agglomerate monoblock base, measuring 133 mm x 320 mm x 133 mm, completely free from oil derivatives to maintain its environmental integrity. What makes this packaging particularly remarkable is its dual functionality - not only does it serve as an elegant vessel for LBV Vintage Port 2012, but it also contains an actual acorn nestled in soil within its base, accompanied by planting instructions cleverly integrated into the wine label. The design incorporates a sophisticated threaded screw system that enables users to participate in forest preservation by facilitating the planting and growing of cork oak trees. This innovative approach to sustainable packaging demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness, as cork oak forests play a vital role in preserving biodiversity, preventing desertification, and absorbing approximately 14 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The design's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its immediate use, as the wooden ring from the package's center can be repurposed to mark planted trees, while the base can be continuously reused to collect and grow new acorns, creating a perpetual cycle of environmental stewardship.
