Old House Renovation Residential House is a remarkable architectural renovation project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern living requirements, completed in 2017 under the creative direction of Mo Shen. This transformative residential design project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design category, masterfully addresses the challenge of renovating two independent houses into a cohesive living space while preserving the essence of Jiangnan architectural style characterized by white walls and grey tiles. The project encompasses a 30-square-meter indoor area complemented by a 70-square-meter yard, featuring an innovative suspended glass box that connects the two original structures while facilitating multiple functional spaces including a hall, living room, bathroom, and study. The design philosophy centers on the symbiotic relationship between humans, architecture, and nature, drawing inspiration from Southern Song Dynasty paintings and their distinctive sense of whiteness. The renovation successfully overcame significant challenges including structural deterioration, water management issues, and the integration of modern amenities while maintaining the property's historical character. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to material selection, incorporating washed stone and rice paper to create authentic Jiangnan aesthetics. A notable technical achievement is the 60-centimeter structural retreat and strategic wall removal, which significantly improved natural lighting, ventilation, and humidity control. The design's particular sensitivity to the needs of its 93-year-old resident, a painter, showcases how thoughtful architectural renovation can enhance quality of life while preserving cultural heritage.
