Originally constructed over three decades ago, this elementary school library underwent a comprehensive renovation to create a playground-like atmosphere that seamlessly integrates reading and play activities. The design philosophy centers on breaking down conventional barriers between educational and recreational spaces, featuring a striking sky-blue exposed ceiling that overcomes the previous spatial limitations and creates an enhanced sense of openness. The library's thoughtful design incorporates varied seating arrangements, including heated floor areas that allow students to read comfortably in multiple positions, particularly beneficial during winter months. The space is distinguished by its carefully considered lighting strategy, which combines new fixtures with repurposed LED installations, and its innovative bookshelf configuration that accommodates different heights and reading preferences of young users. The librarian's workspace is strategically positioned to maintain clear sightlines throughout the facility while providing ample storage solutions. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project, recognized in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates excellence in transforming public educational spaces despite budgetary constraints. The design successfully addresses practical challenges such as managing strong southern light exposure through strategic window treatments and bookshelf placement, while creating an engaging learning environment that encourages both individual and group activities.
