Octagon Lighting
Octagon Lighting is an innovative fine art installation and functional lighting design that masterfully integrates traditional Chinese philosophy with contemporary design principles. Drawing profound inspiration from the ancient concepts of Bagua, Tai Chi, Yin Yang, and Wu Xing (the five elements), this sophisticated lighting installation embodies the harmonious intersection of Eastern philosophical principles and modern artistic expression. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, features an intricate structural composition created through the precise intersection of wooden blocks and metal buckles, showcasing a delicate interplay between points, lines, and surfaces. Crafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery techniques, the installation incorporates premium materials including brass, iron, magnets, teak wood, veneer, and LED lighting components, measuring 1010mm x 1020mm x 4000mm. The design's operational mechanism employs a simple pulley system balanced by water-filled earthenware, allowing viewers to observe the artwork from various angles while maintaining structural stability. The installation's sophisticated construction process required exceptional precision in crafting the mortise and tenon joints, careful management of electrical components, and meticulous wood-bending techniques. This remarkable piece, completed in Hong Kong in 2017, represents a harmonious balance between bold and soft design elements, effectively embodying the Wu Xing elements (metal, wood, water, fire, and earth) through its thoughtful material composition and artistic execution.
