Number Five Forest Commercial Complex
Number Five Forest Commercial Complex is an innovative commercial architectural project completed in 2020 in Wuxi, China, that masterfully integrates natural elements within an urban commercial space. The 1,000-square-meter complex, designed by Bo Li and Pan Xiaodong, represents a significant departure from traditional commercial architecture through its distinctive approach to merging indoor and outdoor environments. The design philosophy centers on creating a harmonious dialogue between built environment and nature, utilizing extensive plantings and organic architectural elements to craft a serene urban sanctuary. The complex's most notable feature is its entrance, which employs abundant vegetation to establish a transitional space between the urban exterior and the interior environment, effectively creating a landscape-oriented indoor space that facilitates human-nature connections. The architectural composition ingeniously employs a rectangular white box framework punctuated by circular elements, breaking conventional geometric constraints and establishing fluid circulation patterns. The design's central axis features concentric circles in the bar area that radiate outward, while three narrow box blocks intersect to create strategic window openings that enhance spatial dynamics. The complex incorporates multiple functional spaces that adapt to various uses, including café areas, exhibition spaces, and performance venues, demonstrating remarkable versatility in spatial programming. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, is distinguished by its innovative use of natural light through strategically placed patios and glass-enclosed plant spaces, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a rainforest while maintaining practical functionality for daily operations.
