note et silence. mint Kobe Retail is an innovative retail interior design project located in the port city of Kobe, Japan, that revolutionizes the traditional shopping experience through its theatrical spatial concept. Conceived and executed by acclaimed designer Shin Takahashi of Specialnormal in 2012, this 82.36-square-meter space transforms conventional retail architecture into an interactive stage setting where customers become performers in their shopping journey. The design's cornerstone philosophy revolves around humor and playfulness, manifested through three primary architectural elements: a floating box-shaped wall, floor, and ceiling. The most distinctive feature is the movable box-shaped wall system, which introduces unprecedented versatility to the retail environment. This dynamic element can be repositioned to create varying spatial configurations - when placed near the entrance, it generates a corridor that intensifies the atmospheric tension, while positioning it at the rear expands the shopping area, effectively transforming the space into a gallery-like setting. The material palette combines acrylic emulsion paint for walls and ceiling, mortar with clear paint for flooring, white urethane paint coating for the cash counter, and oak with urethane clear paint and brass aging paint for furniture elements. This thoughtfully curated interior earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2014, recognized for its innovative approach to retail design that seamlessly integrates functionality with theatrical elements, creating an engaging shopping environment that challenges traditional retail spatial conventions.
