Ningbo Zhonghai Salles Center

Ningbo Zhonghai Salles Center is an exemplary architectural interior design project completed in September 2020 in Ningbo, China, that masterfully bridges contemporary design sensibilities with traditional Chinese aesthetics. The 950-square-meter space, designed by Tianwen Sun, represents a sophisticated interpretation of the Jiangnan ink-painting style translated into three-dimensional architectural language. The project's distinctive design philosophy centers on achieving harmony between modern minimalism and traditional Chinese romanticism through careful manipulation of light, shadow, and spatial elements. The interior architecture draws inspiration from classical Jiangnan aesthetics, incorporating elements such as black roof tiles and white gables, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. The design employs strategic material directionality to create intuitive wayfinding and spatial flow, while the careful balance of light and shadow produces a dynamic interplay reminiscent of traditional ink paintings. This innovative approach earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2022, recognizing its excellence in spatial design, material selection, and cultural integration. The center's design successfully addresses the challenge of creating a space that feels both contemporary and culturally resonant, utilizing implicit details and thoughtful architectural elements to establish a sophisticated dialogue between traditional Chinese design principles and modern spatial requirements.
