Nest Chess Set
Nest Chess Set is an innovative and conceptually rich chess game design that reimagines the traditional chess set through a philosophical lens of unity and peace. Created by Turkish industrial designer Suha Süzen in 2018, this abstract interpretation of chess pieces emphasizes the harmonious relationship between opposing forces, drawing inspiration from Eastern philosophical concepts such as yin and yang. The design's distinguishing feature lies in its nested construction, where chess pieces are designed to fit within one another, creating a compact and portable gaming solution. Manufactured using sophisticated metal wire erosion methods or specialized aluminum extrusion profiles, the chess pieces exhibit a minimalist yet sculptural aesthetic that transforms them beyond mere game pieces into artistic objects worthy of display. The chessboard, crafted from gulfac-coated, self-skinning, cold-foamed polyurethane, splits into two sections and incorporates magnetic elements for secure assembly during gameplay. With dimensions of 60 x 170 x 340 mm when closed and a playing surface of 30 x 340 x 340 mm when opened, the set maintains a practical footprint while offering full functionality. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design category, represents a thoughtful marriage of form and function, where the physical nesting of pieces serves as a metaphor for the ultimate unity of opposing forces. The set's innovative storage solution, combined with its aluminum construction and abstract artistic expression, positions it as both a functional gaming implement and a meaningful gift object that challenges traditional chess set design paradigms.
