Nel Typeface

Nel Typeface

Nel Typeface is a comprehensive and versatile modern typeface system designed by Jasper Nijssen, distinguished by its modular grid-based construction and remarkable versatility across multiple design applications. This innovative typeface family, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, comprises nine distinct variations that seamlessly integrate while maintaining coherent design principles. The foundation of Nel Typeface is built upon a precise mathematical grid system, utilizing three units in width and nine units in height, with each unit subdivided into a three-by-three matrix of subunits. The typeface family includes Regular, Light, and Heavy weights, each complemented by creative display variants such as Brickbuild (a stencil version) and Dots (a dotted interpretation). A notable feature is its sophisticated kerning system, meticulously crafted to ensure optimal letter spacing across all combinations. The typeface's systematic approach to character construction is particularly evident in related letterforms such as 'b', 'd', 'p', and 'q', while maintaining distinctive solutions for more challenging characters like 'k' and 'x'. The family's latest addition, an icon font, introduces innovative combinatorial possibilities, allowing users to create complex symbols through character combinations. Available in both OTF and WOFF formats for maximum compatibility across print and digital applications, Nel Typeface represents a significant contribution to contemporary typography, particularly valuable for designers seeking cohesive typographic solutions for diverse applications ranging from corporate identity systems to editorial design.
