Negative Space Exhibition
Negative Space Exhibition is an innovative interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary architectural elements, realized through a minimalist approach utilizing three primary materials: metal, wood, and Taiwan red clay. Created by designer Jen-Chuan Chang and team in Taipei, Taiwan, this 162-square-meter exhibition space demonstrates exceptional spatial organization and cultural sensitivity. The design philosophy draws inspiration from Chinese painting techniques, incorporating elements such as agricultural by-product rice straw in mud wall construction around windows, exemplifying sustainable design practices. The space features a central glass cabinet with metal framework that creates visual continuity throughout the environment, while maintaining simplicity in both line work and material selection. The project, completed in March 2018, successfully addresses the challenge of expressing cultural implications through three distinct design approaches: Oriental wood construction techniques to mask structural limitations, natural material usage for healthier environmental partitioning, and the manipulation of natural light to create effects reminiscent of Chinese ink paintings. This sophisticated integration of traditional and modern elements earned the project a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its innovative approach to spatial design and cultural preservation. The exhibition space achieves a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal, demonstrating how contemporary design can effectively honor cultural heritage while meeting modern exhibition requirements.
