Natural Composite Pillar Research Prototype

Natural Composite Pillar Research Prototype is a groundbreaking sustainable design achievement that represents one of the largest 3D-printed biological artifacts created using exclusively natural materials. This innovative research prototype, designed by Stylianos Dritsas and Javier Fernandez, stands as a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing technology, measuring between 0.6 and 1.0 meters in diameter and reaching 5 meters in height. The prototype employs a revolutionary composition of cellulose, the most abundant biomaterial on Earth found in plant matter, combined with chitin, a biomolecule extracted from insect and arthropod exoskeletons. This sustainable creation, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, demonstrates remarkable physical and mechanical properties comparable to high-density synthetic foams and low-density timbers. The manufacturing process utilizes an advanced large-scale additive manufacturing technology, incorporating an industrial robot and a viscous colloid dispensing system. The 100-kilogram structure was meticulously printed in 50 vertical segments over approximately 60 hours, with each segment requiring 0.5 to 2.0 hours of printing time. A particularly noteworthy aspect of this prototype is its innovative approach to handling natural material variability through machine learning models that predict material behavior, especially considering that the material loses four-fifths of its weight between its printed and cured states. This research prototype addresses critical environmental concerns regarding synthetic polymer plastics by offering a viable, biodegradable alternative that eliminates the need for petrochemical adhesives or chemical solvents, positioning itself as a potential catalyst for transitioning towards environmentally benign and circular manufacturing models.
