National Essence Environmental Poster is a significant visual communication project that addresses China's critical air pollution crisis through the lens of cultural heritage and environmental awareness. Created by designer Lin Ding in 2016-2017, this series of posters employs a sophisticated flatten style design language to portray traditional Chinese cultural icons, rare animals, world heritage sites, and literary characters as they appear through the haze of pollution. The artwork, measuring 600 x 850 mm, utilizes Adobe Photoshop to create impurities and particle mask effects that symbolize the severe air pollution, particularly focusing on the PM2.5 pollution crisis that affected more than one-seventh of China's land area. The design masterfully integrates Chinese traditional elements with contemporary environmental concerns, featuring carefully considered color palettes that both honor the cultural subjects and effectively convey the oppressive nature of air pollution. This innovative approach to environmental advocacy earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, recognizing its excellence in combining cultural preservation with environmental messaging. The poster series demonstrates exceptional technical execution in transforming three-dimensional character and animal imagery into unified, flattened representations while maintaining visual consistency and cultural authenticity, effectively calling attention to both environmental degradation and cultural preservation through its powerful visual narrative.
