Nar Restaurant is an innovative dining establishment and shisha lounge in Dubai that masterfully blends contemporary urban design with traditional Middle Eastern cultural elements. The 515-square-meter space, which garnered a Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, represents a sophisticated interpretation of fire and smoke themes, reflected in its name 'Nar' meaning fire in Arabic. The interior design seamlessly integrates elements of Bedouin heritage with modern industrial aesthetics, featuring distinctive components such as a sculptural smoke-effect bar with a golden ombre finish, custom-designed geometric patterns on the ceiling, and a central column inspired by traditional shisha pipe architecture. The space incorporates sustainable design elements, including eco-friendly ethanol-based biofuel fire pits and LEED-accredited fabrics with low flammability ratings. The restaurant's layout thoughtfully divides into distinct zones, including a welcoming reception area with Bedouin-style sofas, a non-smoking dining section with private tables enclosed by patterned screens, and a dedicated shisha room that promotes communal gathering. The design's attention to detail extends to innovative lighting solutions, such as LED-outlined black metal pipes forming traditional Arabian archways at windows, while custom graffiti artwork pays homage to regional pop culture. Completed in 2014, the project emerged from extensive research across various Middle Eastern countries, focusing on patron preferences and traditional shisha culture, resulting in a space that successfully balances aesthetic innovation with functional requirements for both local and expatriate clientele.
