Nana's Green Tea Eias Toyosaki Caffe is an innovative interior design project located in Toyosaki Town, Okinawa, that masterfully reimagines traditional Japanese tea room aesthetics for contemporary sensibilities. Designed by Masahiro Yoshida in collaboration with Tae Fukaumi and Asuka Tamaru, this architectural space draws profound inspiration from three legendary tea masters: Sen no Rikyu, known for his ultimate refinement of wabi-cha; his disciple Furuta Oribe, who embraced asymmetry and kabuki elements; and Kobori Enshu, who added sophisticated elegance to the tea ceremony tradition. The design conceptually arranges elements reminiscent of Rikyu's four-and-a-half-mat tearoom from the historic Juraku mansion, creating a transcendent space that bridges past and present. The interior achieves its timeless quality through the innovative application of mortar across floors, walls, and ceilings, complemented by distinctive white line drawings that create a contemporary interpretation of traditional spatial elements. This minimalist approach pays homage to the wabi-sabi aesthetic while introducing modern design sensibilities. Completed between April 2019 and April 2020, the project earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional achievement in spatial design, cultural preservation, and innovative material application. The space successfully creates an immersive environment that allows visitors to experience the profound historical legacy of Japanese tea culture while remaining firmly grounded in contemporary design principles.
