Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe

Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe is a transformative interior space and exhibition design project that reimagines a sixth industrialization support facility for agricultural products in Okinawa, Japan, through the innovative conceptual framework of Farm and Craft combined with the neologistic principle of Foodscape, a portmanteau merging food and landscape to create an immersive experiential environment where visitors engage with agriculture through multisensory interactions including eating, touching, growing, and experiencing the intrinsic connection between sustenance and natural environments. Designed by Koichi Tomiyama in collaboration with Shusaku Nomiyama, Kazuki Ito, Robyn Natsuko Shinozaki, Takashi Hagimoto, and Yuichi Asa, Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe represents a sophisticated response to the declining utilization of agricultural support facilities by establishing a new paradigm for connecting farmers with citizens and bridging the agricultural and tourism industries within the UNESCO World Natural Heritage designated Yanbaru region. The spatial design methodology employed in Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe demonstrates a profound commitment to materiality that evokes agricultural authenticity, incorporating wood, earth, and jute as foundational elements throughout the five-hundred-square-meter cafe space, which forms part of a larger 3,800-square-meter facility situated on a 43,400-square-meter site. The design strategy maximized the existing greenhouse infrastructure through innovative material applications, including the wrapping of hemp ropes around structural columns and the draping of burlap fabric over ceiling frames, which simultaneously functioned as decorative elements and practical sunshades, while the counter wall received a traditional plaster finish applied by local artisans using regionally sourced soil, thereby embedding geographical specificity and craft heritage into the architectural fabric. Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe integrates lush indoor and outdoor greenery with earth-toned furniture and handcrafted decorations fabricated from burlap fabric and hemp rope, creating a cohesive aesthetic vocabulary that reinforces the agricultural theme while maintaining economic viability within the constraints of a public facility renovation budget. The design incorporates edible plants throughout the space, allowing visitors to experience the foodscape concept firsthand while enjoying affordable coffee and fruit juice made from locally produced agricultural products, thereby creating a tangible connection between consumption and cultivation. The outdoor environment of Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe features strategically placed benches and custom-designed tile benches that blur the boundaries between architecture and furniture, creating a seamless integration of space and seating that encourages prolonged engagement with the facility. The project, which commenced in September 2023 and opened in June 2024, addressed the fundamental challenge of revitalizing a facility that had experienced declining user engagement due to high barriers for farmers and insufficient value creation for local residents and tourists, despite being located in an area rich in natural resources and agricultural products. Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe demonstrates how design can serve as a catalyst for community building and regional development by creating spaces that facilitate firsthand agricultural experiences for diverse populations. The design team developed original ambient music specifically for Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe, extending the sensory experience beyond visual and tactile elements to encompass auditory dimensions that enhance the overall atmospheric quality of the space. The collaborative process involved close coordination with contractors to overcome technical challenges during construction, ensuring successful implementation of innovative material applications and craft techniques. Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe exemplifies sustainable design practices through its emphasis on local materials, traditional craftsmanship, and the integration of living plants as both decorative and educational elements. The project received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, recognizing its excellence in innovative use of space, material selection, functional layout design, and cultural relevance. The Silver A' Design Award designation acknowledges Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe as a tremendously brilliant and exceedingly creative work that illustrates outstanding expertise, talent, and acuity in spatial design, representing a remarkable level of excellence that advances the boundaries of interior design practice. Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe contributes to the broader discourse on agricultural tourism and experiential design by demonstrating how interior spaces can facilitate meaningful connections between urban populations and agricultural production systems. The design approach employed in Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe reflects a deep understanding of regional context, incorporating elements that resonate with Okinawan history and culture while creating a contemporary spatial experience that appeals to both local residents and tourists. The use of affordable materials such as burlap fabric and hemp rope in Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe demonstrates how budgetary constraints can inspire creative solutions that align with thematic objectives while achieving maximum visual and experiential impact. The integration of traditional plastering techniques using local soil in Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe represents a commitment to preserving and promoting regional craft traditions while creating authentic material expressions that enhance the spatial narrative. Nago Agri Park Foodscape Cafe serves as a model for how public facilities can be reimagined to serve multiple constituencies, including agricultural producers, local communities, and visitors, through thoughtful spatial design that facilitates diverse forms of engagement and interaction.
