N Strips Residence

N Strips Residence

N strips Residence is an innovative architectural renovation project completed in 2015 in Osaka, Japan, that transformed a 1950s residential building into a contemporary living space through sophisticated design interventions. The project's most distinctive feature is its striking facade treatment, which employs a systematic arrangement of vertical louvers with 30mm x 75mm sections, digitally optimized through Grasshopper software to achieve optimal spacing and opening rates. These white-painted cedar louvers serve multiple practical functions, including concealing aging infrastructure and pipes while providing essential maintenance access, and create an ever-changing visual experience as sunlight interacts with their surfaces throughout the day. The comprehensive renovation encompassed eleven residential units, each thoughtfully redesigned to align with modern lifestyle requirements through the complete reformation of equipment, layout, and interior specifications. The architectural solution elegantly addresses the challenge of urban renewal while establishing a sophisticated presence within its neighborhood context. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to facade treatment and space optimization. The design's success lies in its ability to transform a deteriorating structure into an architectural icon that enhances its surroundings, particularly striking during evening hours when its white louver system creates a distinctive luminous presence. The renovation strategy carefully balanced practical considerations with aesthetic refinement, incorporating seven different dwelling types to accommodate diverse resident needs while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity.
