Museum Of Cycladic Art Cafe

Museum of Cycladic Art Cafe is an architecturally significant interior space that exemplifies the harmonious integration of contemporary design within a cultural institution, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design. Designed by Stelios Kois and Nikos Patsiaouras, this innovative cafe space transforms an atrium into a luminous urban oasis, featuring a sophisticated suspended shading device that creates a distinctive interplay of light and shadow. The design employs thin, deep linear hollow aluminum rectangular profiles arranged in a rectilinear pattern, effectively filtering and diffusing natural light while managing solar glare and radiation without compromising brightness levels. Occupying approximately 120 square meters, the cafe's architectural elements include a striking canopy measuring 4.96 meters in width, 8 meters in depth, and 1.68 meters in height, crafted from white aluminum, Parian marble, Greek walnut, steel, and glass. The space functions as a vital transitional zone between the street and the museum interior, with its facade designed to operate dynamically during museum hours, creating an architectural event that enhances urban connectivity. This thoughtful design approach, completed in December 2014, transforms the cafe into a contemplative sanctuary within the urban context, offering visitors a moment of respite while serving as a destination point within the cultural institution. The project's success lies in its ability to create a sophisticated atmosphere that honors the museum's role as a custodian of Cycladic civilization while introducing contemporary design elements that enhance the visitor experience through careful consideration of light, space, and materials.
