MU JU House

MU JU House is an award-winning residential interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese landscape painting aesthetics with contemporary architectural sensibilities. Located in Shantou, China, this sophisticated living space, completed in 2019, was conceived by designer Yiheng Yang, who masterfully integrated the essential elements of Chinese artistic tradition—namely, the deliberate use of negative space and refined linear elements—into a modern living environment. The design philosophy centers on creating a tranquil urban sanctuary that offers respite from the bustling city life, achieved through the thoughtful application of natural materials including marble, wood, and glazed tiles. Spanning approximately 148 square meters, the interior demonstrates exceptional spatial planning that emphasizes openness and flow, while incorporating traditional Chinese design elements in a minimalist context. The project's distinctive approach to combining cultural heritage with modern functionality earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The design's success lies in its ability to translate the ethereal qualities of Chinese landscape paintings into tangible architectural elements, creating an environment that embodies simple beauty and pure quietness—qualities increasingly sought after in contemporary urban living spaces. The meticulous attention to detail extends to every aspect of the design, from the careful selection of materials to the sophisticated implementation of lighting schemes, all working in concert to create a cohesive living environment that serves as a testament to the possibility of creating culturally relevant, yet thoroughly modern living spaces.
