Mtrl Kyoto Visual Identity is an innovative visual communication system that exemplifies the convergence of traditional Japanese design elements with contemporary digital aesthetics. Created in 2015-2016, this dynamic identity system is built upon a sophisticated 10x10 grid framework that pays homage to both the digital bits to atoms philosophy of the maker movement and traditional Japanese motifs such as Ichimatsumon and Seikaiha. The design's foundational structure comprises four fundamental material symbols, each meticulously crafted to represent the multifaceted nature of materials - encompassing physical, human, corporate, and general material elements. This visual identity system stands out for its remarkable adaptability and transformative capabilities, allowing for various combinations of symbols that can function as logos, typefaces, or icons, reflecting the collaborative and innovative spirit of the space it represents. The design's geometric precision and flexibility enable it to effectively communicate the concept of material diversity and synergistic transformation, while its grid-based construction ensures pixel-perfect reproduction across various applications.
